Scott Park Oak, Scott Park, Galashiels
- Species: Oak (Quercus petraea)
- Grid Ref: NT 489 358
Info
Sited opposite the tennis courts in Scott Park, this oak is notable for its large girth and widely branching crown. It would once have been part of the grounds of New Gala House, built in the 1870's, but is probably even older.
Gala Policies, lying alongside Scott Park, is where the site of New Gala House used to be before it was demolished and at its south west end are several ancient oaks, thought to be remnants of the old Ettrick Forest which once covered the area. Scott Park Oak may also once have been part of Ettrick Forest. Whilst visiting the oak it is well worth taking a walk round Gala Policies which reveals many interesting old trees, including a number of Giant Redwoods next to the swimming pool.
Access
Scott Park is owned by Scottish Borders Council and there is open access at all times. The park is at the south west side of Galashiels, next to the high school and swimming pool. To access it from the town centre turn left off Bank Street onto Livingstone Place. Keep straight ahead until you reach the swimming pool. The entrance to the park is on the left. The Scott Park Oak is opposite the tennis courts.
